Garrett Reese
Intern/ContributorGarrett is a WYSO intern and graduate student at the University of Dayton. He spent time covering the Dayton area with WDTN Channel 2 News after the 2019 Memorial Day Tornado outbreak. It was around this time that he began listening to NPR and fell in love with radio-based journalism. Garrett graduated from UD in May of 2021 with his Bachelor’s in Communications with a focus in journalism and graduated in May of 2022 with his Master’s. While not working at WYSO, Garrett is an avid reader, loves to play video games, and hanging out with his friends.

The Edward Wren Building in Springfield recently received tax credits to restore the historic building. The tax credits total nearly $4.5 million, and the project will cost nearly $32 million.

Clark State College has entered a memorandum of understanding with Infinity Labs. The college and defense technology firm will work together to train and education students for the STEM workforce.

The Ohio Department of Transportation kicked off construction season on Monday. In total, ODOT is expecting to invest $2.5 billion into more than 1,000 projects, including 198 projects in Southwest Ohio.

The Big Hoopla STEM Challenge was hosted on Sunday at the Dayton Convention Center. The event combined the NCAA Basketball Tournament with science to get children interested in the STEM field. There were over 20 exhibitors with interactive exhibits and a high-stakes basketball competition.

The Municipal Court in Montgomery County has opened a new Western Division. It will serve the Cities of Trotwood and Brookville, as well as numerous surrounding villages and townships.

Starting this Fall, students at Miami University can earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Cybersecurity. The degree will combine aspects of computer science with the skills and knowledge of security.

The University of Dayton Fighting Flyers was selected as the top Army ROTC program in the Midwest, earning the 2022-23 General Douglas MacArthur Award. Recently, WYSO’s Garrett Reese spent a morning with the group to learn more about how they train.

Clark County opened a new 911 Communications Center last week. The new center cost around $6 million and will be the dispatch center for nearly every local municipality and all 10 townships in the county.

On Saturday, the musical artist Candice Hoyes performed with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. Hoyes weaves together classical, jazz, and pop to tell stories of African American experiences.

Clark State College recently established the Black Educators Support Fund. It was created to support the recruitment, retention, and development of Black educators. It was started by an anonymous donor who was concerned about the issue.
