Montgomery County hasn’t raised customer rates since 2022. But officials say rate increases might carry over to the county’s 230,000 water customers if the dispute isn’t resolved.

The U.S. EPA declared the Donnelsville, Ohio, aquifer a Superfund site because of its contamination, but residents are still connected to wells recharged by that aquifer. The current solution of putting filtration systems on wells isn’t sustainable.

Tremont City Barrel Fill was used as a landfill for industrial waste from 1976 to 1979. It’s only three miles from Springfield’s drinking water wellfields and a few miles from two waterways. The testing will give insight into whether contamination is spreading off-site.
