Community Leaders Announce Formation of Oversight Committee
Community leaders are set to form a Justice Committee in response to controversies at the Montgomery County Jail.
Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley announced the group’s formation Monday, after meeting with Sheriff Phil Plummer, Montgomery County Commissioner Dan Foley, and State senator Peggy Lehner. The news comes after the Montgomery County Commission asked the Justice Department to investigate alleged civil rights abuses at the Montgomery County Jail.
The new 10 member committee will “make recommendations on policies, facilities and resources” at the jail. Sherriff Phil Plummer will serve as an ex-officio member. Other members will be appointed by Plummer, Whaley, Foley, and Lehner.
In a statement, Whaley said they are seeking individuals with experience in mental health and substance abuse treatment, civil rights, and law enforcement for the committee.
