Clark County WIC Program to Lose Funding

The Clark County Women, Infants and Childrens' program or WIC, will be cut by more than $240,000 and officials expect to close at least one office or lay off staff.

The nutrition program plans to close its New Carlisle office and is considering moving the operation into donated rental space.

WIC helps poor families pay for formula, canned or frozen fruits and vegetables, milk and bread. Executive Director Rita Jones said it's hard to predict if more services or staff will be cut in the near future.

"At this point, it's real unclear on what's going to happen until after the elections occur," she said. "And that's just my opinion. At this point we just know for sure that effective October 1, we will be losing $240,000 of our current funding level."

Jones said she was aware that cuts to funding were going to happen. She calls them severe, but insists clients will not receive fewer services.
