Central State Fires Kellen Winslow as Athletic Director

After nearly four years as athletic director at Central State University, NFL Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, Sr. is now out of a job.

Central State University President Dr. John W. Garland announced on Tuesday the appointment of Jahan Culbreath as interim athletic director to take over for Winslow.

Culbreath has more than 20 years of experience in athletic coaching and administration, and is a 1992 graduate of Central State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication.

“I am excited about the opportunity to build on the foundation in place and serve the University,” said Culbreath, whose appointment is effective immediately.

Winslow’s time as AD will officially end on June 12. He was hired in August of 2008 and was later named director of athletics and student wellness. His son, Kellen, Jr., is also an NFL star and currently plays for the Seattle Seahawks.

Winslow was responsible for moving the football program into the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and development of the successful Leadership Speaker series, which brought legendary football Hall of Famer Gale Sayers and NBA Hall of Fame star Magic Johnson to the CSU campus.

But his exit leaves more questions than answers. Winslow said he was fired after a meeting with Garland and the termination was not based on job performance, but was personal.

Garland denies the parting of the ways with Winslow is personal and is even grateful for the ex-AD’s service at CSU.

“Kellen has provided leadership and vision to the Athletic Department and established a greater presence for our CSU Athletics. We are grateful for his contributions,” Garland said.
