The Contemporary Dayton is proud to present Xaviera Simmons: Figure Eleven, a major solo exhibition bringing together recent works in photography, painting, video, and the world premiere of a new body of bronze sculptures by one of the most bold and visionary artists of our time.

Simmons’ practice is deeply rooted in art history, both through deliberate assertion and continuous engagement, drawing on references that span from antiquity and the American landscape to contemporary media. Her work unfolds through a cinematic sensibility, where narrative, movement, and stillness intersect. This is evident in her photographic series such as American Book Covers and Sundown, in her monumental text paintings, and now in this new body of bronze sculptures.

Performance, choreography, and the sensual are integral to Simmons’ artistic language. In this recent sculptural work, these elements coalesce into forms that feel both classical and contemporary. As with much of her practice, Figure Eleven situates art history within an ongoing continuum, like a film that resists final resolution.

The sculptures recall the Venus of Willendorf and Venus de Milo while simultaneously reflecting the multiplicity of contemporary bodies and motifs. Their power lies in their capacity to collapse and reconcile distinct historical and cultural narratives. The figures embody a poised stillness that resonates with the language of movement and performance. Figure Eleven, both the exhibition’s title and the newest figurative sculpture, appears as if drawn from a film still, a moment suspended between gesture and permanence.

Ages 16 + Learn a beautiful art form in Rosewood’s newly renovated glass studio! The Intro to Enameling course provides students with a basic understanding of enameling through creation of small enamel pieces. Students learn various techniques, such as graphite drawing, water color, and separation enamel. Each class session will introduce different enamel techniques. Classes are devoted to demos and working on the techniques introduced.

Waffle Shop is a 95 year tradition at Christ Church of sharing great food and fellowship with the people of Dayton.  We raise funds through the sale of our beloved waffle lunches, and then grant 100% of the proceeds to small local non-profits benefiting our brothers & sisters living on the margins in our community.  Here at Christ Church we preach the Gospel always, using waffles when possible! We are pleased to announce that $13,000 in grants was awarded to 23 local organizations from our 2023 Waffle Shop proceeds!

If you're interested in learning more about plants and gardening, eager to participate in hands-on, intensive training, enjoy sharing your knowledge with others, and have the time to attend sessions and serve your community—then plan to attend one of the upcoming Open Houses. Master Gardener Volunteer training will be offered in 2026, beginning in February and running for 10 weeks. Join us at Wagner Subaru for Cars & Confidence: Women’s Subaru Service Essentials!
This fun workshop is designed to help you feel more confident about caring for your vehicle. Learn how to schedule service, what to expect during visits, how to tell the difference between upselling and valid recommendations, and how to spot red flags in a service department. Then, head into the garage for a demo where you'll get familiar with key parts of your Subaru, check fluids, understand dashboard lights, and even go over how to change a tire.
All attendees will receive a Subaru Gear gift, enjoy light refreshments, and have the chance to ask questions during an open Q&A. This is a judgment-free zone—all Subaru owners are welcome!
