Local Students Face Higher Extracurricular Fees

Parents of students across the Miami Valley are higher facing higher fees for their kids to participate in school sports and other extracurricular activities. The Dayton Daily News reports that for the affected districts, the average increase is more than 100 percent.

The Beavercreek, Huber Heights, Valley View and Vandalia Butler school districts are all facing increases. This comes after each announced multimillion dollar cuts to address budget shortfalls.

Pay to Play Fees apply to activities that include sports, band and speech and debate, although the newspaper reports that sports costs the most. The Springboro Community Schools has the highest area fees at 365 dollars per sport.

While there is support in place to help parents deal with the cost, some school officials worry that it will mean students will be priced out of participating and that the schools will lose athletes.
