Best of the Book Nook: Remembering Herbert Woodward Martin

Professor Martin and Vick Mickunas.

Professor Martin and Vick Mickunas.

Professor Martin appeared on the program six times over the years. Herb

Martin lived and breathed poetry. He wrote it. He interpreted it. He

recited it. Herb celebrated poetry on a daily basis.

Dr. Martin was a devoted admirer of the poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar.

Dunbar was a Daytonian and a friend and contemporary of Orville and

Wilbur Wright. Herb Martin was a Dunbar scholar-listening to him

performing Dunbar's poems on the radio was one of those Book Nook

highlights that will always remain among my most cherished memories.

This memorial program contains excerpts from three of our interviews:

"The Shape of Regret" (2020)

"Sometimes Say My Name" (2021)

"On the Flyleaf" (2015)
