Local Artists To Screen Short Film Collection On Criminal Justice System At The Neon

Provided by Mariah Johnson

A short film collection featuring reflections, stories, and creative musings on our criminal justice system and its faults is premiering at The Neon in Dayton. Brie Hope, Dionte Allen, Leroy Bean, and Mariah Johnson, four artists from the Artist Power Hive - Midwest collective, are presenting their new collaborative work "Healing Through Freedom, Freedom Through Healing" on Sunday July 18th at 7:30 and 9 PM in collaboration with The Neon. The quartet spoke to Excursions host Evan Miller at WYSO about their coming together, the project's mixed-media contents, and what they hope viewers will learn and absorb from the films.

The Neon presents the premiere screening of "Healing Through Freedom, Freedom Through Healing" by Brie Hope, Dionte Allen, Leroy Bean, and Mariah Johnson this Sunday evening July 18th at 7:30 and 9 PM. A pre-showing Q&A with the artists, as well as a viewing of the "We're Doing It All Wrong" exhibit by local art curator Edward Dixon, will take place at 3 PM at the Edward A. Dixon Gallery at 133 N. Ludlow St, and a post-premiere after-party will be held at Dayton cocktail bar Tender Mercy. More information can be found at NeonMovies.com or Eventbrite.com.

Evan Miller is a percussionist, lover of sound, and is probably buying too many cassette tapes online right now. Evan got his start in radio in 2012 at WWSU at Wright State University, where he was studying percussion performance. He followed through with both endeavors and eventually landed a lucrative dual career playing experimental music at home and abroad, and broadcasting those sounds to unsuspecting listeners Sunday nights on The Outside. Maintaining a connection to normal music, Evan also plays drums in bands around the area, and hosts WYSO's Midday Music show. When not doing something music-related, Evan is most likely listening to podcasts or watching food videos at home with his cat.
