Intergalactic Space Force visited WYSO for a live studio session on Kaleidoscope. The band talked with music director Juliet Fromholt about their continuing evolution.
After a 2019 performance at the Werkout festival, the members of Intergalactic Space Force were excited about their collective momentum. They embraced the forced slowdown of the pandemic as a time to record and have begun releasing a series of singles including their latest, "Disco G."
"A song kind of forms out of jamming together and just throwing some ideas into a bucket, seeing what really sticks and what feels good," said Mikaela Jones (bass). "Sometimes songs that we've played live on stage that aren't even finished yet. Part of the process is continuously revisiting it and thinking of different ways to approach it and things to add to it."
One addition to the band's sound has a distinctly local feel. Previously only performing instrumentally, Intergalactic Space Force is incorporating vocals using a talk box.
"I've worked with Zapp before and other bands and you know this was like a really unique sound and instrument that we wanted to add with the upbeat music that we want to perform. Dayton Funk straight up," said Marcus Cornwall (keys, talk box)
Intergalactic Space Force is planning for a busy summer, full of live performances of all sizes, with a special emphasis on their hometown.
"We wanted to do a run of shows in Dayton because we really didn't play that much when we started out," said Cornwall. "We were always hitting the huge festivals and gigs, but we kind of thought this time, let's just do a Dayton run and come back home and play as many."
