Book Nook: Unconventional & Unexpected, by Roderick Kiracofe

Roderick Kiracofe fell in love with quilts forty years ago. At the time he was living in SW Ohio. In his new book "Unconventional & Unexpected : American Quilts Below the Radar-1950-2000" he describes how he first became aware of quilts and how he then developed a passion for this under appreciated art form. Today he is one of our leading authorities on quilts.

This magnificent coffee table volume contains numerous photos of quilts that were made during the last half of the 20th Century. Many of the illustrations reveal both sides of the quilt. In this interview the author tells why he decided to show the bottoms of some quilts along with the tops. And he explains the significance of the time period from 1950 to 2000 in the quilt world as well as the changes that have occurred in quilt collecting since he first got started doing it in the 1970's.

In a fascinating aside Roderick reminisced about the time he spent living in Yellow Springs before making the move to San Francisco. While he was living in the village he enjoyed spending some time doing a radio show on a quirky little community radio station known as WYSO.
