Dayton Veterans Affairs Taking Steps To Protect Its Nursing Home Residents

The Dayton VA Medical Center is closing its Community Living Center to all outside visitors.

Community Living Centers are VA nursing homes. The VA says Center residents tend to be older and have complex underlying health conditions - which makes them particularly vulnerable to infection.

The Center is also suspending all new admissions and transfers from other facilities, and all staff are being screened daily before coming into contact with residents. The facility will continue to take resident transfers from other VA facilities only after it's been confirmed the patient has not contracted COVID-19.

“While the COVID-19 risk to average Americans remains low, these commonsense measures will help protect some of our most vulnerable patients,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie in a press release.  “VA will make every effort to minimize the impact of these policies on Veterans while putting patient safety first.”

Visitor exceptions are being made only for residents in hospice care, who are entering the final stages of their lives. Those visitors will be limited to their loved one's room only.

The Dayton VA Medical Center has 200 nursing home beds.
