Best of the Book Nook: In His Own Voice, co-edited by Herbert Woodward Martin

Herbert Woodward Martin returned to the program to discuss the work of Paul Laurence Dunbar. At the time we originally presented this radio program Herb had just published a collection of Dunbar's work, "In His Own Voice: Dramatic & Other Uncollected Works," which he co-edited along with the scholar Ronald Primeau. Two years later his collaborator on this project would publish his own study of the work of Herb Martin.

In my view Herb is our leading authority on Dunbar's work. He has devoted years to his examinations of a man who was incredibly prolific over his short life. When Herb recites Dunbar it is an amazing thing to behold. In this interview he talked about how he had tried to resist the allure of Dunbar, a poet who has haunted Martin since childhood, and how he eventually succumbed and began what has now become decades of devoted study of Dunbar's life and immense literary output.

The Book Nook on WYSO is presented by the Greene County Public Library with additional support from Washington-Centerville Public Library,  Clark County Public LibraryDayton Metro LibraryWright Memorial Public Library, and Microsun Lamps.
