Central State University Offers Record Sealing Clinic

Central State University

Having a criminal record can make it difficult for someone to get a job, attend college or find housing. But certain records can legally be sealed from the public, which can have a long-term impact on someone’s life. Central State University Extension is offering a record sealing clinic tomorrow from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. where residents will get free one-on-one help from attorneys.

The appointments on Saturday will be done virtually, but computers and internet will be available at Omega Baptist Church in Dayton if needed. RTA is also providing free transportation for those with limited transportation access.

Anthony Barwick is the Community and Economic Development Program Leader at Central State University Extension. He says this service is personal for him because he has two sons who are currently incarcerated.

“I know parents and family and friends who have to deal with this as well as returning citizens and people that are currently incarcerated,” he said. “Those that are eligible deserve a second chance to be a productive member of our society.”

Close to 90 residents will learn about the record sealing process and get help filling out forms through the clinic. Registration has ended for this weekend’s event, but Barwick said they plan to host another clinic early next year.

While working at the station Leila Goldstein has covered the economic effects of grocery cooperatives, police reform efforts in Dayton and the local impact of the coronavirus pandemic on hiring trends, telehealth and public parks. She also reported Trafficked, a four part series on misinformation and human trafficking in Ohio.
