Flash Flooding Reported In Northern Miami Valley Friday
Flash floods were reported in some areas of the Miami Valley today after severe thunderstorms passed through the region Thursday night.
The storms produced about 4 to 6 inches of rain in just a few hours, according to the National Weather Service. That resulted in flooding in areas north of Dayton including Wapakoneta and Bellefontaine. A number of roadways were closed Friday morning due to the flooding, and two drivers were rescued from their submerged vehicles on streets in Shelby County.
Scott Hickman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says drivers should immediately turnaround if they encounter a flooded roadway.
“Because you don’t know how deep it is. You don’t know if the roadways has been washed away. And also people underestimate the power of water. It only takes a foot of water to elevate a car and cause it to float.”
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecasted for tonight. Hickman says the National Weather Service will watch for renewed flooding and issue advisories as needed.
