Columbus has appointed its first woman to serve as police chief. City officials announced Thursday their appointment of Deputy Chief Kimberly Jacobs as the city's 32nd chief of police. She replaces an interim leader who has served since the city's police chief retired.Jacobs started with Columbus Police in 1979 as a patrol officer on the city's West Side. She was the first woman in her rank to become commander and later deputy chief.
Jacobs has overseen training, budgeting matters and disciplinary issues. She also serves as a liaison to City Hall and labor unions.
