Dayton Postal Center to Be Moved to Columbus

The U.S. Postal Service has decided to move Dayton’s mail processing to Columbus. The Dayton Business Journal reports that the move may result in the loss of 175 local jobs; the center in Dayton employs 432 people.  The Postal Service says that they will be given the option to relocate.

Operations from eight other Ohio facilities will relocate to other sites, mostly in Cleveland or Columbus.  The Cincinnati processing center was spared.

The Service’s Chief Operating Officer, Megan Brennan, say that the consolidations are “necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation.”

The postal service previously agreed not to consolidate facilities before mid-May.  The Dayton center will continue to serve residential and business mailings until the closure occurs; a date has not been set.
