Since 2011, WYSO's Community Voices training program has been putting local voices on the air, giving people the time and space to tell their own stories, in their own words, without commercial interruptions. In 2014 we expanded the program to include local high school students, and Dayton Youth Radio was born. Dayton Youth Radio, and founding producer Basim Blunt, teaches broadcasting and storytelling skills to about 45 teenagers each year, guiding each students' story from the classroom to the WYSO airwaves. Dayton Youth Radio gives local high school student a voice. And as the future of Dayton, they have a lot to say.
Participating high schools include: David H Ponitz CTC, Dayton Early College Academy DECA, Dayton STEM Academy, The Miami Valley School, Tecumseh High School, Yellow Springs High School, Centerville High School, Stivers School of the Arts, Springfield STEM Academy, Springfield High School and Thurgood Marshall Career Academy
Dayton Youth Radio is supported by theVirginia W. Kettering Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council. To learn more about Dayton Youth Radio, contact Basim Blunt at bblunt@wyso.org.
