Soundtracking the Cinema: Grease

Admit it. As soon as you saw the title of this article, you started humming the “Grease” theme song to yourself. Hit records tend to make you do that. Well actually, smash hit records stay in your head forever, which is what the “Grease” single is, as well as the album where the song comes from, Grease: The Original Soundtrack from the Motion Picture. The Grease soundtrack was/is a smash that’s sold 14 million copies since its 1978 release.

Like all super-classics, both the Grease soundtrack and the film were so beloved that the American public practically lived with them. As far as the soundtrack, here are three reasons why it exploded:

There were actually six singles from the Grease soundtrack that were released, but the three aforementioned cuts are the ones that took off and became mega-hits. “Grease” and “You’re The One That I Want” both reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, and “Hopelessly Devoted” got to number three. Each song became a classic that helped propel the soundtrack and the movie to blockbuster levels. They also became some of America's favorite songs.

The Grease soundtrack and movie combined to give us all a fantastic experience that we gladly relive via music and film streaming. After all these years, "Grease” is still… the one that we want.
