WYSO Weekend: May 29, 2016

WYSO Weekend

In this WYSO Weekend you’ll get the details on Dayton Pride 2016. And audio highlights from Friday’s wreath laying ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse in honor of those who have lost their lives in service to our country.  Those stories and more... see details below.

  • Women’s Voices from Dayton Correctional Institution
  • Dayton Youth Radio: Jameeka Swain about being black and proud of her culture. Jameeka says she demonstrates this everyday through her hairstyle. Her story is called "My Natural Journey." Project coordinator Basim Blunt introduces the story.
  • Next weekend, Dayton will host its 40th annual pride celebration with events running Friday through Sunday.  To get the details on those events we spoke with Allison Cox – a board member with the Greater Dayton LGBT Center. We met at MJs on Jefferson – one of the event sponsors and also talked about how Dayton Pride has changed in the last 40 years.
  • Every memorial day, a wreath is laid on the Veteran’s Plaza at the Ohio Statehouse during a ceremony that involves service members, families of those who have served, state leaders and Ohioans who want to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles produced this sound portrait of the service that was held Friday.
  • Last Saturday night, the future of aviation came to Dayton – where manned flight was created. The Solar Impulse, an electrically powered aircraft which uses solar cells to generate its power, landed at Dayton International Airport on the latest leg of an attempt to circle the earth. Our aviation commentator Dan Patterson was there.

  • Bill Felker with Poor Will's Miami Valley Almanack.
