World renowned sitar player Anupama Bhagwat is slated to perform at the PNC Arts Annex this Saturday, August 8, at 7:30PM. Sitar Sutra – Echoes Of A Timeless Land explores the depth and range of classical raga music.
"Sitar is typically a North Indian instrument, and it has its roots from Persia as well. In this program I will also showcase the folk traditions of India," explains Bhagwat. "The songs, which are very popularly adopted from the folk traditions, have been given a classical approach. There will be a quick glance through the entire landscape of India."
Bhagwat started playing the sitar at 9 years old, and studied under doyen of the Imdadkhani gharana, Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, for almost two decades.
"Since we don't have a written music it's an oral tradition where the teacher passes it on. So it's more by the process of induction," said Bhagwat. "You are kind of learning and internalizing, not memorizing. You are learning how to think in music and not just how to read and just play. So it's a lot of process where your personality is kind of shaped into a musician and how we can think in these notes. So that was a very interesting journey."
