The former South Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger was on the run for many years. The fugitive was at the top of the FBI's most wanted list until 9/11 when Osama Bin Laden took over that spot. After they tracked down Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan Whitey Bulger heard the news at his hideaway apartment in Santa Monica and he knew that the FBI would soon focus on catching him again and he was absolutely correct.

In "Hunting Whitey: The Inside Story of the Capture & Killing of America's Most Wanted Crime Boss" the authors Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge describe how Bulger was able to conceal himself in plain sight for so long and how relentless sleuthing by the FBI along with a few lucky breaks finally gave law enforcement agents the leads they needed to bring Bulger to justice.

After Bulger was brought to trial and sentenced to prison he was eventually placed in a facility that was the equivalent of giving him a death sentence. Why this was allowed to occur remains a mystery.
