Book Nook: How Quickly She Disappears, by Raymond Fleischmann

One of my favorite aspects about the process of talking to authors about their work are those times when I have opportunities to interview writers who have just published their first books. Some of these authors have gone on to become very well known. When that happens I like to recall what it was like to talk to them when they were still unknown, still fresh, still uncertain about their prospects.

The other day I recorded a radio show with an author who was about to publish her first book. After we finished recording our program she admitted that it had been her very first interview. Perhaps some day in the future I will be able to look back at that special debut novel and her first interview about it and say, wow, look at her now!

I have been doing this long enough that I usually get a sense when I'm talking to a first timer that yes, this one is going somewhere, that we'll be hearing a lot more from this person. That's the feeling I got when I read "How Quickly She Disappears" by Raymond Fleischmann. This splendid novel was such a pleasure to read. The story takes place in Alaska during the early 1940's. I predict we'll be seeing many more great books from this author.
