Paul Doiron has published the first two books in a murder mystery series that features the Maine game warden Mike Bowditch. The first book, "The Poacher's Son" (Minotaur Books) recently came out in paperback. The second novel, "Trespasser" (Minotaur Books) was released in hardcover last week.
While it isn't crucial to read these books in chronological order it might be more fun. I read them out of order so I was excited about going back and reading "The Poacher's Son" so that I could gain some added insights into
the latest book.
The author is the editor in Chief of "Down East: The Magazine of Maine." He possesses an intimate knowledge of the North Woods. He became fascinated with stories he had heard about the exploits of Maine's game wardens.
Mike Bowditch became a game warden to make amends in a way for the fact that his father Jack is a notorious game poacher. The two men are estranged. When his father becomes a suspect in some brutal murders his son experiences some deeply conflicted emotions. The second book opens with what seems to be a typical event, a deer has been hit by a car.
Someone had made off with the deer carcass before the game warden arrives on the scene. Then the murder mystery begins in another tightly plotted page turner.
