Book Nook: The Sentry by Robert Crais

The first time I interviewed Robert Crais on WYSO he was on his first national book tour. That was about 16 years ago, Crais had quit a successful career as a writer for TV shows like Hill Street Blues and LA Law to try out his hand writing novels.

Over the years Crais has carved out a niche as one of our leading literary crime fiction novelists. His noir thrillers are set in Los Angeles where the private investigator Elvis Cole and his buddy, Joe Pike are always running into bad guys who must be stopped. Cole has had the lead role in most of the books but recently his sidekick, the mysterious Joe Pike has been taking the lead.

And the books seem to be more popular all the time. In the latest, "The Sentry," we find Joe Pike falling hard. No, not down one of the LA canyons. Pike is in love. Plus, there's one of the baddest bad guys Crais has ever imagined.

Over the course of a dozen interviews I have had an opportunity to get to know Robert Crais a little. He's a gifted writer. And he's one heck of a charming guy.
