About 50 people stood in line at the BMV at Dayton's Pinewood Plaza at 12pm on Tuesday.

Ohio’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles reopened today after being closed since mid-March. The department has extended the deadline for renewing licenses and IDs if they expired after March 8th. Still, some area offices had long lines today.

At 12 p.m. there were about 50 people in line outside the BMV office at Dayton’s Pinewood Plaza.

Residents waited to renew their IDs so they could cash their stimulus check, apply for low income housing, or go out for drinks tonight.

Robert Riley of Dayton is self employed; he does lawn care and works on cars. He said he was missing out on work because he was still waiting in line after more than an hour.

“It’s a very big inconvenience, it really is. It’s just time consuming. The longer I stand here, the longer I lose money,” he said.

The BMV did encourage Ohioans to use their Get In Line, Online service instead of going in person. But by 10:15 a.m. this morning, the webpage was down.

While working at the station Leila Goldstein has covered the economic effects of grocery cooperatives, police reform efforts in Dayton and the local impact of the coronavirus pandemic on hiring trends, telehealth and public parks. She also reported Trafficked, a four part series on misinformation and human trafficking in Ohio.
