WYSO is partnering with Stats and Stories, a podcast produced at Miami University.

Most of the time statisticians go about their work without much fanfare. They crunch numbers and interpret data in the hopes that the information will help people better understand their world. The work of statisticians can be helpful to policymakers and even influence their approach to problem-solving, that is when they know what the statistical research on the topic says. The intersection of policy and statistics is the focus of this episode. Rosemary Pennington and panelist John Bailer, Chair of Miami’s Statistics Department, are joined by Steve Pierson. Pierson is the Director of Science Policy for the American Statistical Association, a position he’s held for the last twelve years. In that role, Pierson has worked to raise the profile of statistics as a discipline, as well as government statistics and statisticians nationally. As Director, he’s also advocated for the creation and maintenance of a robust data infrastructure.
