The Yellow Springs native Virginia Hamilton received many honors during
her lifetime. Now, 19 years after her death, she has gotten another one.
The Library of America recently issued a collection of five of her
greatest works in one volume. Edited by Julie K. Rubini, this anthology
showcases Virginia's distinctive style and her incredible storytelling
abilities.
The non-profit Library of America is preserving classic works by
American authors with gorgeous editions in perpetuity. Over 300 releases
so far. Rubini, the editor of this volume, wrote a biography of Virginia
a few years ago and she got to know Virginia's husband, the poet Arnold
Adoff.
I knew Virginia. Arnold died earlier this year. I knew him, too. They
were an amazing couple. Arnold was deeply devoted to preserving
Virginia's work and her legacy. I had a lovely chat about Virginia and
Arnold with Julie Rubini.
This latest honor would have delighted them both.
The Book Nook on WYSO is presented by the Greene County Public Library with additional support from Washington-Centerville Public Library, Clark County Public Library, Dayton Metro Library, and Wright Memorial Public Library.
