Fuyao Workers To Vote On Unionization Beginning Wednesday

Jerry Kenney

Workers at Fuyao Glass America will begin voting Wednesday on whether to move forward with plans to form a United Auto Workers-sponsored union.

Workers filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board in mid-October, citing workplace safety issues and inadequate wages and benefits. Last year workers, with help from the UAW, filed a list of safety complaints with the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration, or OSHA.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have weighed in on the unionization effort.

More than a dozen Republican state lawmakers signed a letter urging workers to “reject outside forces" trying to come into Fuyao. Democrats have called for Fuyao management to take worker concerns seriously.

Fuyao leadership has said they would prefer to have "direct" dialogue with workers rather than communicate through union representation.

Voting will take place Wednesday and Thursday at Fuyao’s Moraine Plant. Votes are expected to be counted Thursday night.
