Ohio's attorney general says a new advisory group will review the debt-collection practices for unpaid student loans at public colleges and universities in the state.
Attorney General Mike DeWine says the state has an obligation to collect such debt, and the goal is to ensure that Ohio's practices are fair, transparent and thorough.
He says the advisory group will review his office's processes for student debt collection and litigation. It will consider whether there's uniformity in universities' policies and penalties for unpaid accounts. DeWine says the panel also will examine whether students are sufficiently educated about their responsibilities when they get student loans.
The group includes lawmakers, students, financial representatives from several schools, and representatives from the Department of Higher Education and the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.
