The Madison Local School district is closed today as the Butler County Sheriff's Department investigates a shooting by a teenage boy that injured four students, including two who were hit by gunfire.

Police say 14-year-old James Austin Hancock opened fire in the cafeteria of Madison Junior/Senior High around lunchtime yesterday, hitting two students. They were flown to a hospital yesterday and were reportedly in stable condition.

Two other Madison Local Schools students were injured, possibly from shrapnel or from running away.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones says they were prepared to handle the crisis.

“We’ve been training for these responses to these school shootings sadly to say, for years,” said Jones.  “The school has been training how to respond to these shootings for years. And then you respond, and it’s a muscle memory.”

Jones says Hancock ran from the school after the shooting and was apprehended with the help of a police dog.

None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
