The Barclaycard call center opening up in Butler County will hold job fairs in Hamilton and Cincinnati this week. Barclay’s, which is a major international financial services company, plans to hire 1500 people over three years at its new location north of Cincinnati.

“It really does have a regional impact,” says Jody Gunderson, director of economic development for Hamilton. The company’s choice of Butler County was a big win for the city and state, which offered a combined $20 million worth of job creation tax credits to the company for the move. The city’s share of that totals $15 million in nonrefundable credits that could extend up to 15 years.

It’s not that long since call centers were generally closing in the U.S. and opening up in Mexico, India and other places overseas. These days, those jobs have become more skilled and competitive, and while wages are going up in many Asian countries, they are stagnant herein the U.S..

Barclaycard will hold job fairs for the first round of open positions Wednesday in Hamilton and Thursday in Cincinnati. The company plans to hire 250 people by the end of 2016, with commitments to add the rest by 2018. Many are entry-level call center jobs.
