The Gem City Heat, a Dayton youth basketball team, took home the Amateur Athletic Union National Championship trophy in Florida earlier this month.
The team of rising fifth and sixth grade boys were honored at a Dayton Commission meeting on Wednesday.
Jonathan Washington, a team coach, said at the meeting that getting to this point took a lot of effort and discipline.
“These young men have worked hard since early March to get to this point today," Washington said.
Gem City Heat is a nonprofit youth basketball organization that gives local kids a chance to participate in athletics at little or no cost.
