Best of the Book Nook: Horseshoes, Cowsocks & Duckfeet: More Commentary by NPR's Cowboy Poet & Former Large Animal Veterinarian by Baxter Black

Vick Mickunas' 2002 interview with Baxter Black

19 years ago a tall drink of water sporting a 10 gallon chapeau came striding into our studios in Yellow Springs. It was the cowboy poet Baxter Black and he was on a book tour for his essay collection "Horseshoes, Cowsocks & Duckfeet: More Commentary by NPR's Cowboy Poet & Former Large Animal Veterinarian." At the time Baxter was well known to NPR listeners, his commentaries were aired regularly on the network.

He's a funny fellow. We had a good time together. That was his only appearance on the program. I hear he's still active. Although I also understand that he eschews most technology. Bless his heart.

The Book Nook on WYSO is presented by the Greene County Public Library with additional support from Washington-Centerville Public Library, Clark County Public Library, Dayton Metro Library, and Wright Memorial Public Library.

Vick Mickunas introduced the Book Nook author interview program for WYSO in 1994. Over the years he has produced more than 1500 interviews with writers, musicians, poets, politicians, and celebrities. Listen to the Book Nook with Vick Mickunas for intimate conversations about books with the writers who create them. Vick Mickunas reviews books for the Dayton Daily News and the Springfield News Sun.
