Greene County residents affected by the Memorial Day tornadoes may not have to pay any penalties if they don’t get their 2018 second-half property taxes paid by the July 19 deadline.
County Treasurer Kraig Hagler says residents affected by the storms still have to pay their taxes within the next year but his office will help with any late fees applied to those taxes.
“So for taxpayers in Greene County that are unable to make their second-half property payment due to maybe an insurance settlement....we're giving them the ability to not pay their taxes, wait until they get the funds from the insurance settlement, and then once the taxes are paid, we can assist them in filling out just a one page request for penalty forgiveness.”
Property taxes paid 10 or more days after the due date typically incur a 10 percent penalty. Hagler says the Ohio Revised Code already has provisions for waiving late fees on property taxes. The county treasurer’s and auditor’s offices have chosen this option to help eliminate any potential accounting errors down the line.
Greene County also allows residents to apply to have their property values lowered if they feel they’ve been assessed too high. This includes storm damaged properties and those that received little or no damage.
