17 years ago when Alan Furst came out to Yellow Springs for a live interview he was just beginning to win acclaim as one of our leading espionage writers. During our conversation that day he explained his fascination with the period from 1939-1941 and how he is intrigued by the history of those years in Europe as the German forces were sweeping across the continent.
Furst has gone on to build a solid career with a string of meticulously researched stories set during that war. With each successive novel he further solidifies his place as one of our greatest spy novelists. I have had him on the program since then but I'll always treasure this first interview because I was catching him just as success had finally found him.

My interview with Alan Furst aired on July 20, 2019, exactly 50 years to the day since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made their historic landing on the surface of the Moon. In honor of that moment I pulled out an excerpt from my first interview with Buzz Aldrin to close out the program that day as he recalled that monumental experience. Back in 1996 Buzz had been my guest because he was the co-author (along with John Barnes) of a science fiction novel called "Encounter with Tiber."
