The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) is hiring a Disaster Recovery Manager with funds from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The organization was awarded a $720,000 grant from the federal department’s Economic Development Administration. The Dayton Foundation also provided a local match of $180,000.
The position will focus on the long-term needs of communities and businesses recovering from the Memorial Day tornadoes.
MVRPC Executive Director Brian Martin says the region was already distressed following the 2008 recession.
“We were already a recovering region, and then the tornadoes hit which exacerbated the recovery, especially in those local communities,” he said.
In addition to recovery, this new role will help prepare the region for future disasters.
“[We’re] making sure that we have a good regional system so that no matter what part of the region is affected next time, we'll be able to bounce back and respond,” he said.
The position is funded for five years and the commission plans to fill the opening by April 1.
