An acid spill Monday at Wright State University led to the evacuation of ten buildings on campus and the cancellation of classes for the day.
A lab technician spilled more than two liters of acetic acid, a chemical used as a cleaning agent in classroom laboratories, in the basement of Oelman Hall, just before 10 a.m. Monday.
According to the university, no students were injured. In a release, Wright State spokespeople said "two Wright State University police officers received minor injuries responding to the incident, suffering airway and eye irritation. One officer was transported to the hospital. Both officers were treated and released."
Hazmat teams assisted with ventilating the buildings.
At 2 p.m. Monday, once cleanup was complete, students were allowed back into classrooms to collect personal belongings, but ten buildings remained closed for the day. Employees in those areas were sent home.
Diggs Laboratory, Medical Sciences, Biological Sciences I & II, Dunbar Library, Library Annex, Allyn Hall, Millet Hall, Oelman Hall, Fawcett Hall and Brehm Laboratory stayed closed as a precaution and were set to re-open Tuesday June 24 at 6:59 a.m.
