The Clark County Board of Developmental Disabilities 8-year additional levy was defeated Tuesday. Unofficial results show that 12,811 voters approved, while 14,560 said "no" to passing the measure.
Until November 2012, the board hadn't had a levy defeat since 1967. With two straight losses now, Board Superintendent Jennifer Rousculp says her agency won't be able to do as much for the developmentally disabled in Clark County.
"Some of the pieces and parts of what we do will have to be reduced or eliminated," she said. "We will have to do less than what we're doing now. And where those reductions or cuts will be, will really be something the board and those involved with strategic planning will help us decide."
Rousculp feels voters didn't want to approve any levy asking for additional funds.
"There's an anti-government sentiment and certainly an anti-no-new-tax sentiment as well," she said. "There's also sometimes a feeling that well if it doesn't affect me or my family, that we don't have to vote for it."
The Developmentally Disabilities Board projects a near $4 million deficit in 2014, after losing $2 million in state funding over the past year and having its levy defeated on Tuesday.
