Dorothy Stang's Killer Released From Prison in Brazil

The man who was convicted of killing a nun from Dayton in 2005 has been released from prison.

Rayfran das Neves Sales served only eight years of his 27 year sentence for murdering Sister Dorothy Stang in Brazil. He will carry out the rest of his sentence under house arrest. Sales is prohibited from frequenting bars, must sleep at home and find a job. He was released on last week.

Sales confessed he shot Stang six times on a muddy Amazon road. Two accomplices, are serving 17 and 18 years.

Stang was killed during a dispute with ranchers  over Amazon rain forest land that she wanted brought under the protection of the Brazilian government. Stang is a Dayton native who spent three decades in Brazil trying to preserve the rain forest and help the poor settlers there.
