The United Way of Greater Dayton will cut funding to the Dayton area Red Cross by 76 percent for next fiscal year. And as WYSO's Emily McCord reports, the Red Cross is appealing that decision.CEO of the Red Cross, Tom Fodor,calls the cuts unprecedented.
"I'm very concerned because it's a slashing of the safety net in our community. These emergency situations and needs aren't going to disappear. So as I hope that United Way and this community takes that into consideration as we go ahead into the future," says Fodor.
But Jayne Klose with United Way says they have a new model that advances not just health, but also income and education. She says the organization had to change its funding allocation to equally support the new programs.
"It was simply a matter of not enough money available to go around to meet all of the important priorities in the health area to their full request," says Klose.
Fodor says the Red Cross will begin an appeals process. He says no matter the outcome, their organization will continue its work in the community.
