WYSO Weekend: September 1, 2019

In this edition of WYSO Weekend:

On August 25, 2019, thousands of people took to the streets in the Oregon District for Dave Chappelle’s Gem City Shine benefit show. The star-studded event featured performances from artists including Stevie Wonder, Chance The Rapper and others. Chappelle proposed the concert to “reclaim” the Oregon District after the mass shooting earlier this month that killed nine people and injured more than 30 others. The event also raised money for a fund set up to help victims’ families. For WYSO News, Community Voices Producer Jason Reynolds reported many of the night’s performers and party goers called for legislative action on gun violence.

Many cities have neighborhoods where it’s hard to find healthy food, especially fruits and vegetables. In Columbus Ohio a new mobile market is bringing healthy food to people who live in these food deserts. Side Effects Public Media’s Paige Flaiger reports the veggie van is part of a wider effort to see what helps people eat better.

And speaking of food desserts, Trotwood Mayor, Mary McDonald says she was taken by surprise when local grocer, Jim Davis, announced he will close the Trotwood Foodtown store, as well as another Foodtown in Tipp City. We spoke to the mayor about the news this week and asked her about what some are calling the loss of the last grocery store in the city.

Today we go to Woodstock Ohio in Champaign county. There, County Lines producer Renee Wilde discovered a sort of traveling sisterhood, women from all around Ohio and neighboring states have come here on the anniversary of the legendary Woodstock Music Festival in New York.

The basics of flying are a time-tested routine that goes back to the Wright brothers, aviation commentator Dan Patterson has some thoughts about that and his instructor.

Bill Feleker has this week’s Poor Will’s Almanack.
