Best Of The Book Nook: Sex, Time, and Power by Leonard Shlain

Almost twenty years ago Leonard Shlain made his first appearance on the program. Dr. Shlain came through the area on book tour for "The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image." Our conversation that afternoon clearly made an impact with listeners. To this day I still hear from people who heard the interview and were intrigued by it.

In 2003 he returned to our area to publicize "Sex, Time, and Power: How Women's Sexuality Shaped Human Evolution." On that day in our studios the author was once again in fine form. Now and then we have a guest who can speak for extended periods of time without interruption. Sadly, that approach can be boring for the interviewer, since I do like to be an active participant in a conversation, and quite possibly it can be painful for some listeners as well. Fortunately he was one guest who could take the ball and scurry across our imaginations with it. He was capable of holding our interest. Listeners were not tuning out. If anything they were calling their friends up and telling them to dial in to WYSO right now! He was very engaging.

As you listen to this interview I am certain that you will be fascinated by what he had to say that day and also impressed by his intellectual acuity and his compelling manner of speaking. Leonard Shlain died in 2009.
