2019 marks the fourth year of collaboration between Yellow Springs Brewery and WYSO near the WYSO Community Concert, renamed this year as the Listener Appreciation Concert.  Yellow Springs Brewery's Lisa Wolters and Nate Cornett visited the WYSO studios to talk to Niki Dakota about the latest iternation of Vox Populi, a community minded pilsner.

When I was a child I didn't keep track of the days of the week before I began going to school. When I was about four years-old I began to recognize when it was a Friday. That was the day that my dad would come home from work with a six pack of beer. His brand was Budweiser. Years later I tried some of his beer, just a sip, and I spit it out. It was awful stuff; I could not understand the attraction.

There are signs the tourism business may be on the upswing in Clark County. Tourist-related revenue there is up by more than $100 million since 2010. That growth is also fueling a welcome boost in hiring in Springfield, as new businesses and attractions pop up, enticing visitors to spend.

It’s First Friday at the Hatch Artist Studios in Springfield.

Jereme Zimmerman returned to the program to talk about his exciting new book about home brewing. Some of you might recall that on his previous visit to the show he told us about his adventures in making mead.

His new book is just as interesting and as beautifully conceived as his previous one. We learn the history of brewing beer, ales, and other things and he shows us some amazing recipes and techniques for creating our own tasty beverages.

A growing industry in Ohio is calling on local, state, and federal officials to take a serious look at water quality issues. Craft brewery owners say their business completely hinges on safe drinking water. 

Several craft beer companies gathered at Land Grant Brewing in Columbus to urge government leaders for help in protecting the waterways.

As Colin Vent with Seventh Son Brewing explains, most microbrews need about five to seven gallons of water in order to produce one gallon of beer.

When Europeans came to Ohio, one of the first crops they cultivated was hops; A small green flower that’s a main ingredients for brewing beer, which was a staple of their diet.

The Ohio Valley provided the perfect soil for the fast growing plant. But, in the early 21st century came Prohibition, plus plant diseases and harmful insects.  So Ohio farmers eventually quit growing hops. 

Springfield Brewery Rises to the Top

Springfield’s downtown revitalization efforts got a big boost recently when the city’s first craft brewery, Mother Stewart’s, was named one of the top new breweries in the nation by Beer Advocate Magazine. Brewmaster Kevin Loftis says the designation will help them expand their business.

A good cup of coffee in the morning and a local craft brew at night are just a couple of life’s simple pleasures many of us enjoy. Over the past decade or so, more and more people in the US are waking up to the quality differences between the drinks we, and our parents grew up with and those produced by real artisans.  Perhaps as important as those drinks are the gathering spaces they’ve provided.  Many towns now have cafes and microbreweries where locals gather to chat and listen to music or see art exhibits while sampling beverages.

A request for a Captain Stardust and a Wobbly Wheel may sound unusual, but it's actually the sound of drinks being ordered at the Yellow Springs Brewery, just outside of Dayton, Ohio. It’s a scene that’s become common as micro-breweries pop-up across the Miami Valley. It's also the sound of money being made. That's become more common, too.
