Best of the Book Nook: The Vendetta Defense by Lisa Scottoline
Vick Mickunas' 2001 interview with Lisa Scottoline
Lisa Scottoline published her first novel in 1993. I hosted my first radio shows on WYSO that same year. While Lisa was attending Lower Merion High School in Philadelphia I was not too far away at St. Andrew's in Delaware. Our varsity crews used to row against one another. Although I seem to recall they were known as Lower Merion and Upper Darby? When our teams would compete they made friendly wagers, often their rowing jerseys. The vanquished crew would strip their shirts off after the race and surrender them while the victors were hurling their coxswain into the lake in celebration. I wasn't a rower but I coveted those rowing jerseys-I had some very desirable record albums to trade and was able to barter with a rower who had lots of shirts for a Lower Merion jersey and another from Monsignor Bonner HS. I wore those jerseys until they fell apart.
I suppose what I am trying to say is that I have known Lisa for a long time, I love her work, and over the course of a number of interviews I have really come to appreciate her as a human being. She's smart, she's funny, and she bubbles with excitement. I feel like we have been on a similar trajectory.
Back in 2001 Lisa came to Yellow Springs to talk about her novel "The Vendetta Defense." As you listen to this interview I hope you'll recognize just how much fun we were having together. We can never have enough fun, right. Especially now!
Lisa has new book coming out in 2021 and I am hoping I can talk to her again. She's one of my favorite people.
