In Hour 1 alone, we'll be visiting Muscle Shoals, Chicago, Berlin, Queens, Louisiana, France, Belgium, Jamaica, and the UK (which has to be some kind of record). After THAT? Theme time. This week's theme is CRYPTOZOOLOGY: 2 hours of tunes about mythical beasts and mysterious critters from all over the map. Join the expedition. We'll leave the door unloched for you. Sorry- that was the best I could come up with at the moment.
This week, we revel in "SARTORIAL SPLENDOR". We'll be celebrating tunes about clothes and accessories- high AND low fashion- from everyone from Fred Astaire to Rancid to Fats Waller to the Hollies. The mods will be there. So will the rockers. So will the glitterati and the ragamuffins. How 'bout you? Dress up, dress down...whichever you choose.
This week's theme, in honor of that spookiest of holidays, is DEAD & UNDEAD- we'll be spinning tunes about ghosts, vampires, zombies, and such from Red Sovine to Marianne Faithfull to Outkast to the Misfits, with a multitude of stops in between, so stock up on garlic, stakes, incantations, baseball bats..."whatever gets you through the night" as a wise man once said. It'll be a scream.
Normally, we celebrate a theme in the last one or two hours of the show, but THIS week is a little bit different. For all three hours, I bring you my "Desert Island Mixtape": as many of my personal all-time favorite jams that would hypothetically fit on three C-60 cassettes, along with reasons why they made the cut.
Roll up for the Magical Mystery Drive! It's WYSO's Fall Fund Drive and, to celebrate, your weekly musical multivitamin, the Jewel Case, is spinning our favorite covers of Beatles tunes. The Fab Four cast a long shadow over Music, and we'll be chasing it all over the map tonight, with interpretations from everyone from Aretha Franklin to Al DiMeola to Eddie Izzard to Soundgarden, and a whole bunch more.
To quote Mr. Mayfield: you don't need no ticket, just get on board. This week we're ridin' the rails; we'll be picking some of of our favorite train tunes from a near-inexhaustible supply of songs on the subject. I ask you: where else are you going to hear Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Scorpions on the same playlist? Only here, that's where. We'll save you a window seat.
Last week our theme was "Up"; this week- you guessed it- it's "Down". We'll be spinning tunes about getting down, being down, going downtown, shuttin' em down, burning down, and many other down-related activities. It'll be downright downtastic.
I was going to do an "Up & Down" theme but, after compiling about 9 hours' worth of tunes in no time at all, I decided to split it up. Therefore, this week, we'll be dealing strictly with "UP"; Hank to 'Trane to Savages to Marley and gobs more will weigh in. Plus- some notable birthday celebrations and obits, and a little bit of globetrotting in the first hour, as well. That's what's up.
We've got a fun one in store this week: our theme is "Frankly, My Dear..." We'll be celebrating songs both BY Franks (Zappa, Sinatra, Morgan, etc.) and ABOUT Franks (from Pearl Bailey to Ween). Frankly speaking, you won't want to miss it.
