It’s not often that we touch on stories like that of 10-year-old Takoda Collins. The boy, abused both physically and sexually for years, died back in December. Since then, Takoda’s father has been arrested, along with two other women living in the home. And it’s been revealed that, despite numerous complaints from teachers and others over the years, the police, courts and children's services across multiple jurisdictions were not able to connect — at least, not in time to save Takoda’s life. Polly Parks and Karen Bocko are founders of a group called Takoda’s Call. Polly and Karen were so moved by what they heard — so outraged — they’re organizing people together to ask questions about how children are being cared for here in the Miami Valley.
In the final days of the Vietnam War, people knew the end was near. 3000 children were evacuated from South Vietnam and taken to the United States and other countries for adoption. Two and three babies were placed in boxes and watched by nurses. On Sunday, March 8, 2020, Antioch College will continue their arts series called SOUND ACTION. The series, which began in January, is being curated by Catalina Jordan Alvarez, Visiting Assistant Professor of Media Arts. The series continues Sunday at 1 p.m. at The Little Art Theater in Yellow Springs with a screening of the film The Lake and the Lake from filmmaker Sindhu Thirumalaisamy, who will be on hand for a Q&A after the showing. In this interview with WYSO, Alverez tells us more about her approach to SOUND ACTION, and we speak with Thirumalaisamy by phone. She is a native of India, currently living in New York.
