The Dayton Foundation says a fund set up to help victims of the mass shooting is on track to raise more than a million dollars. As of Monday afternoon, individuals had donated around $620,000 to the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund. The foundation set up the fund early on August 4th - just hours after a gunman killed nine people and injured more than two dozen others.
Vice President of Development and Donor Services at the Dayton Foundation Michelle Lovely says corporations are also contributing in a big way.
"We've seen at the Dayton Foundation, so much tragedy in the past several months, but one thing that we've consistently seen is the commitment to giving back into helping others. Truly, an outpouring of love and compassion for the victims and it's been really heartwarming just to see little kids come in with their six dollars that they raised from a lemonade stand to big corporations that are doing massive gifts. You never think some of these things would happen right here at home. It's just been so wonderful to kind of see the community just dig in and stay strong."
People can donate to the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund in several ways - checks can be mailed or taken in to the Dayton Foundation using fund number #8365. You can also donate through the foundation’s website or by texting the Dayton to 20222.
The foundation says they’ll have the fund open for the next thirty to sixty days and in that time they’ll determine how the funds will be dispersed.
