Ohio Supreme Court Dismisses Personhood Amendment Challenge

The Ohio Supreme Court has dismissed a challenge aimed at blocking efforts by a group that's seeking to declare in the state constitution that life begins when a human egg is fertilized.

A proposed amendment from Personhood Ohio would expand the definition of a person to include every human being at every stage of biological development, including fertilization.

An opponent group called Healthy Families Ohio filed a complaint in January with the high court, arguing the proposed amendment should be split into two ballot issues, not put forth as one. The group also had claimed the amendment's summary was not a "fair and truthful" description of the measure.

A spokeswoman for Healthy Families Ohio says attorneys are reviewing Wednesday's court decision to see whether the group has other legal options.
