Cleveland Begins Process Of Selecting Community Police Commission

More than 100 people are vying for a spot on the panel that will select members of Cleveland’s new Community Police Commission. The list of potential candidates submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s Office includes judges, social activists, religious leaders, lawyers and professors.

The selection panel and Community Police Commission are part of the consent decree between the U.S. Department of Justice and Cleveland. The commission will make recommendations on improving police practices and community relations. One of the people hoping to be on the 13 member selection panel is Gabriella Celeste, head of Case Western Reserve University’s Childhood Studies Program.  She would like commission members who understand adolescent development.

“Because young people and their interactions with police both impact their individual exchanges, but also what they witness and see how other young people are treated, how family members are treated, how members in their community are treated when involved with police makes a difference ultimately in their sense of legitimacy for the whole police force,” she said.

The Justice Department and Mayor Frank Jackson must chose the 13 member selection panel by July 12.
